Gorillaz - Plastic Beach

The new Gorillaz album was released on NPR public radio for free today. This may or may not be said album, but it is a link with the name. And I do recommend getting it.

This album is filled with other artists adding to Albarn's Gorillaz project, most notably Snoop Dogg on the track "Welcome to the World of the Plastic Beach", and Lou Reed on "Some Kind of Nature".

I'm listening to it as I type this so I can't really review it, but here it is. I'm not sure if there'll be any songs as awesome as Feel Good Inc or Clint Eastwood, but so far what I've heard is good. Moving in a bit of a different direction, very musically interesting with orchestral arrangements mixed with a 90's hiphop sound (which actually doesn't sound like a different direction, but it is kinda different).

I'm not saying this is a link to the album, but it is a link, and you should click it.

*cough*

Orgy - Candyass

Candyass is the 1998 debut ablum of the industrial rock band consisting of ex hair metal guys, Orgy. With a sound very similar to that of Nine Inch Nails, Candyass boasts some great material, specifically "Blue Monday"... which actually isn't an Orgy song at all. "Blue Monday" is a cover song of the band New Order-- which consisted of ex members of Joy Division. Orgy just put a modern twist on this 80's synth rock song.

1. Social Enemies
2. Stitches
3. Dissention
4. Platinum
5. Fetisha
6. Fiend
7. Blue Monday
8. Gender
9. All The Same

Manchester Orchestra - I'm Like A Virgin Losing A Child

This is Manchester Orchestra's first full length album, which came out in 2006. They kinda blew up in popularity last year with the release of "Mean Everything to Nothing", got a lot of radio play. Their first album kicks ass. It's a bit more of a pop sound than their latest album.

A lot of the melodies and themes from "Mean Everything to Nothing" are similar to this album. Listening to this album is almost like listening to their newest one if it were done in more of a rock sense. So if you like that one you'll love this.

Tracks to check out include "Now That You're Home", "I Can Feel Your pain" is one of those heart wrenching soft, intimate acoustic songs. "Where Have You Been" is another great song, really good build ups full of synth choir voices. "Don't Let Them See You Cry" and "Colly Strings" round out the album nicely.

1. Wolves at Night
2. Now That You're Home
3. The Neighborhood is Bleeding
4. I can Feel Your Pain
5. Where Have You Been?
6. I can Barely Breathe
7. Sleeper 1972
8. Golden Ticket
9. Alice and Interiors
10. Don't Let Them See You Cry
11. Colly Strings

Mew - And The Glass Handed Kites

I've had some Mew sitting on my hard drive for a while, but I couldn't for the life of me tell you what Mew sounds like, because I never listen to it. So I decided to give this one a shot. Very dreamy pop rock. Lots of ambient synth sounds combined, more dreaminess in the vocals. Not really my style, but it's good. Very full sound, epic at some points.

If you're a drummer you'll certainly appreciate this.

I can't pick out any specific tracks, nothing really stands out to me outside from time signature changes that make me go "oh shit". In general it seems like a good album to listen too while stoned.

So light up, boys.

Kasabian - The West Rider Pauper Lunatic Asylum

Kasabian is such a potentially awesome band. But whenever I hear songs like "Shoot the Runner" and "Reason is Treason" I expect an awesome album full of straight up driving rock, like in those songs. But what I get is techno infused rock that honestly bores me. I find it hard to get through a Kasabian album, even if there's quite a few gems in there. And they're fuckin' ace live. Watching them on the Brit awards sparked me to give this album a listen.

The West Rider Pauper Lunatic Asylum is Kasabians newest album, released June 2009. If you like Muse you'll probably like this. I don't really care for Muse, personally. I have a feeling it'd be a much better listen on drugs.

1. Underdog
2. Where Did All The Love Go?
3. Swarfiga
4. Fast Fuse
5. Take Aim
6. Thick as Thieves
7. West Rider Silver Bullet
8. Vlad the Impaler
9. Ladies and Gentlemen (Roll the Dice)
10. Secret Alphabets
11. Fire
12. Happiness

"Underdog" is a nice powerful opener. It's got that dance beat feeling, but still manages to rock the fuck out.

"Swarfiga" is an instrumental track. First one to really bore me on the album. I guess I'm not big on instrumentals unless there's something really special about it.

"Thick as Thieves", hell yeah. Finally something that sounds different. I love the waltzy feeling, the low-fi sound gives me an "old west" feeling. Probably my third favorite song on the album, behind "Fire" and "Underdog".

"Vlad the Impaler" is okay. Really brings out the danceyassed club feeling, sounds like something that'd pop up in a rave.

"Fire" is by far the best song on the album, it's got that driving feeling like drew me to them in the first place.

"Happiness" is a nice ballad, it's a good closer. Really feels like an ending here, which is good. I don't like when albums are just a bunch of songs randomly tossed together. Even if I find the female choir thing they've got going on at the end a little corny, but it works.

So here's your damn link.
